Copeland swiped his key card over the digital reader and then stood back. I stepped up to the cell door, now unlocked for me. It didn’t have bars but was instead made of solid metal with a single window in the center. I could only imagine how confining that felt to be inside. But at least it would offer us some privacy now.

“Just knock when you’re finished,” Copeland said quietly.

I nodded and then pushed open the door and stepped inside.

The room was small and gray.

Gray walls, gray floor, and, you guessed it, gray ceiling. In the midst of all that gray was Kai.

His white shirt might have made him stand out except for the way he’d hunched his shoulders and hung his head like he was trying to fold in on himself.

He didn’t even look up when I walked in, though I could sense through the mate bond that he’d recognized me. What the hell?

Behind me, the door clicked shut.

“Hey,” I said.

His head came up slowly.

Our eyes met, and in his dark gaze, a storm raged.

I watched as his hands gripped the bench seat, his knuckles white with the effort. He didn’t get up and approach me. If anything, he seemed to be gripping the bench so he wouldn’t get up.

“Hi,” he said in a ragged voice.

My heart squeezed for whatever had made him sound so wounded.

I sniffed suspiciously. “Are you hurt?”

“No, I’m fine.”

He wasn’t fine, though. He was so damn far from fine it wasn’t funny.

“Kai.” I took a step forward and watched as he tensed.

“What are you doing here?”

I stopped, completely at a loss. He’d never rejected me like this. Not even before when he was pretending to hate me. Even then, I’d always known part of him wanted me. But this… I didn’t even understand how he could do it when I could tell his wolf wanted so badly to close the distance.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“We should talk,” he said quietly.

“Okay, so talk.” I sank onto the L-shaped bench seat. It ran the length of this wall and then curved around to the far one where he sat. But I didn’t use it to slide closer. Instead, I remained perfectly still, desperate for him to just explain himself.

“Cherise came to see me yesterday,” he began, and my wolf instantly went on alert. My hackles rose at the unfamiliar name.

“Who’s Cherise?”

“A friend,” he said, which only made me more triggered. I forced myself to breathe deeply, knowing full well Kai could sense my rage. He did nothing to calm it. “She told me about the alpha challenges,” he said, not quite meeting my eyes.

“What about them?”

“She said you hadn’t added your name to the challengers yet.”

“I haven’t,” I said.

His eyes met mine again, something painful sparkling back at me from their dark depths. “But you will, right?”

“I don’t know. What does this have to do with us, Kai? Or with you volunteering to remain locked in a cell? Let’s go home. Talk about this—”

“My name’s been added,” he said.
